In line with the expansion of international cooperation, an online joint meeting was held attended by the officials of the International Relations Department and School of Public Health of Teuku Umar University and Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences on April 30, 2024. In this meeting, the two sides introduced their universities and preliminary negotiations were held to conclude a memorandum of understanding between the two universities. UTU officials invited SSU to participate in a public health event in coming September.

Teuku Umar University (Indonesian: Universitas Teuku Umar, abbreviated UTU) is an Indonesian public university with ten faculties providing three degree programs in the faculty of public health.

Dr. Amin Dehghan, the TEFL lecturer at the School of Paramedical Sciences, presented his article at the 6th Magic of Innovation Conference in Linguistics, hosted by MGIMO University  in October 2023. Considering his research innovations in the field of English for special purposes, he was awarded a Travel Grant by MGIMO University to participate in this conference as a speaker.

On the sidelines of the meetings, Dr. Dehghan introduced Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences and Yazd University and distributed brochures and prospectus related to both universities to interested international participants.

In addition to the discussions held for mutual interaction and cooperation in English language education with the director of the linguistics department of this university, considering Dr. Dehghan’s experience in teaching Persian to non-Persian speakers, he was welcomed by the professors of Persian language of this university and students of International Relations who explained parts of Moscow’s historical monuments in sweet Persian.

Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) also known as MGIMO University is an institute of higher education located in Moscow, Russia, offering educational programs in 18 fields of study, including international relations and regional studies, politics, governance, diplomacy, world economy, law, journalism, foreign trade and management, energy affairs, linguistics, and environmental studies. According to the Guinness Book of Records, MGIMO in 2019 taught 54 full time languages during every academic term, the most in any academic institution.

On November 14, 2023, SSU hosted Prof. Hashem Akhavan-Tafti, a prominent international Iranian chemist and inventor living in the US. More than 400 university professors and students participated in this meeting. Prof. Akhavan-Tafti, who is originally from Taft, Yazd, is a discoverer holding more than 70 U.S. Patents and over 100 international patents related to chemiluminescent substrates used in medical diagnostic assays, and these inventions have had a profound impact on the field of chemiluminescence. His lecture was held in Shahid Feiz Hall of the School of Public Health, hosted by the Department for Research and Technology of the University and the School of Pharmacy, with the topic of path to succeed in research. In an inspiring and moving speech, Prof. Akhvan-Tafti spoke to the audience about the ups and downs of the path he passed since childhood and the challenges he faced; that he kept every experience in his own toolbox and used each one at a specific point in his life. He encouraged the students to persevere, strive without giving up, act on critical thinking, have a holistic view, and have a passion for learning and discovering.

Prof. Akhavan-Tafti is the vice president of research for Beckman Coulter’s immunoassay and molecular diagnostics business group in Southfield, Michigan, where he manages a team of scientists researching innovative detection technologies for clinical and life-science laboratories. He began his career in 1989 at Lumigen, and stayed on after that company was acquired by Beckman Coulter.

Substrates he invented are used worldwide in automated systems for the chemiluminescent detection of alkaline phosphatase conjugates and in ultrasensitive assays in life-science research and human identity testing. More than a billion tests are conducted annually using these substrates. His team has refined methods for chemiluminescent enhancement, developed applications for DNA and protein detection using chemiluminescence, and developed methods for nucleic acid purification.

Four faculty members of Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences were included in the updated list of World’s Top 2% Scientists 2023 published by Stanford University. According to Elsevier, publicly available database of top-cited scientists provides standardized information on citations, h-index, co-authorship adjusted hm-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions and a composite indicator (c-score). The selection was based on the top 100,000 scientists by c-score (with and without self-citations) or a percentile rank of 2% or above in the sub-field.

A joint meeting of health tourism activists was held on October 24th, 2023 at Shahid Sadoughi Hospital. The meeting which took three hours was attended by the directors of Yazd hospitals including university and private hospitals, the officers of the international patients departments of Yazd hospitals, officials of SSU international affairs, officials of SSU Department for Clinical Affairs, travel and tourism agencies, and the officers of Cultural Heritage Organization.

In this meeting, all the participants mentioned the opportunities and challenges in their area of activities and discussed the expansion of intersectorial cooperation between the departments to further develop health tourism industry and attraction of international patients in the world heritage city of Yazd.
