The origins of medical education can be traced back over 700 years to the city of Yazd. However, within an academic context, Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences and Health Services started its academic life as the first medical university founded after the Islamic Revolution by 45 medical students in 1983. Nine years later, in 1994, following the national plan of merging medical schools in the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, the School of Medicine was transformed into the University of Medical Sciences. 

Currently, this university has 10 Schools, 15 Research Centers, 13 hospitals, and 10 Health Networks throughout Yazd province. Around 6000 students study at SSU, of which 12% are post-graduate students (PhD and MS) and 6% are clinical assistants (specialties, subspecialties, and fellowship).

Since its inception, SSU has graduated over 22,000 healthcare professionals in diverse fields of health, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, midwifery, and paramedical sciences.

Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences and Health Services, as the first university established after the Glorious Islamic Revolution, and the Center of Excellence in infertility research and treatment, and a leading university in the country is dedicated to developing knowledgeable, creative, dependable, and supportive health professionals, and providing the best care to every patient through integrated clinical practice, education and research to make a meaningful contribution to society’s health and well-being.

In accordance with the structure of Iran’s Health Care System, Medical Sciences University within each province bears responsibility for overseeing the entirety of the province’s health care delivery and related educational activities.
